What kind of winter footwear did women wear in the 1940s?

Lately I've gradually been dressing more and more in the style of the 1940s. Most of my clothing is either vintage, or vintage-style, but since I live in Chicago, pumps are really not an option during the colder months. However, I haven't been able to find any information on what kind of boots women wore during the winter in the 40's. Any help is appreciated.
